Capstone Green Energy’s partnership with Andretti Steinbrenner Autosport is setting the standard for sustainability in motorsports. The Capstone microturbine technology sets the pace when it comes to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable practices.
The NTT INDYCAR© SERIES waved the green flag when it announced aggressive sustainability efforts both on and off-track aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of motorsport, similar to strides taken within Formula 1 and other racing series. Together, Capstone Racing and Andretti Steinbrenner Autosport have an advantage when it comes to reducing the carbon impact of Andretti’s racing operations. We will be showing off just what we can do at our first ever Carbon-Neutral Race Weekend for the 2023 PPG 375 at Texas Motor Speedway.
Andretti Autosport’s first on-track carbon-neutral race weekend will feature a Capstone Green Energy C65 microturbine, using renewable natural gas (RNG) to power the Andretti Steinbrenner Autosport VIP hospitality facility for the entire event weekend. What’s greener than that? The on-site Capstone C65 microturbine will also feature an EV charging station, allowing Andretti Steinbrenner Autosport guests with EV vehicles a carbon-neutral avenue for charging.
This innovative, portable power solution is provided by Capstone Engineered Solutions, a partner of Capstone Green Energy. The RNG fueling the microturbine will be supplied by Texas-based Sapphire Gas Solutions (Sapphire), a national leader who provides turnkey liquefied natural gas (LNG), compressed natural gas (CNG), methane-mitigation services for public utilities, and RNG solutions for portable and permanent carbon-neutral energy. This installation will leverage the combined expertise and experience of Capstone and Sapphire to deliver a clean and green portable power solution during our inaugural carbon neutral race weekend.
RNG is considered a carbon neutral fuel because it’s derived from organic sources – such as food waste, garden clippings, and animal and plant-based materials. RNG has even greater benefits when it’s produced from organic waste that would otherwise decay and create methane emissions.
By using RNG in this solution, Andretti Steinbrenner Autosport will neutralize the CO2 emissions from all on-track racing activities among the four Andretti Autosport entries over the course of practice, qualifying and race sessions during the PPG 375 race weekend.
